McCain: Overturn deserves Champion place

by Michelle Fortune , 07 February 2012

Donald McCain is expecting Overturn to finish in the top four in next month's Stan James Champion Hurdle.

Overturn has run 13 times since August 2010 with the eight-year-old recording victories over jumps as well as on the Flat but the Champion Hurdle is his main target for the season.

Having won the Coral Ascot Hurdle the gelding went on to land the Fighting Fifth Hurdle just a week later before he finished second Grandouet in the International at Cheltenham.

Despite finishing third to Binocular in the Stan James Christmas Hurdle, McCain believes his charge has a big improvement in him and he is expecting a solid performance from him at Cheltenham.

"I would expect him to be in the first four," the trainer told At The Races.

"He wasn't quite as sharp as he could have been in the International (at Cheltenham) and he definitely wasn't at Kempton. That puts him right in the mix."

Despite his confidence McCain is under no illusions as to the task facing his stable star, but he is hopeful he can prove a big danger to the field on March 13.

"You wouldn't go expecting to beat Hurricane Fly, but a bouncing Overturn would be able to compete with most of them. He could run a big race," he added.
