New contracts for Earls and Leamy

by Michelle Fortune , 07 February 2012

Keith Earls and Denis Leamy have pledged their future to Munster and Ireland by signing a new two-year deal with the IRFU.

Earls made his international debut against Canada in 2008 and has gone on to win 26 caps for his country with the most recent coming in the World Cup quarter-final defeat to Wales, while he was also a member of the 2009 British and Irish Lions squad for the tour of South Africa.

In total he has scored 11 tries for Ireland, including five at the World Cup, and amassed 21 tries in 66 appearances with Munster.

He missed Sunday's RBS Six Nations defeat to Wales for personal reasons but he has rejoined the squad and is in line to be named in the team to face France in Paris on Saturday.

“I’m excited about getting back in with the Ireland squad this week and hopefully getting the chance to play against France this weekend in the tournament," Earls said.

"I’m really happy to get my contract completed as well. Munster has been my only home as a player and growing up only a few hundred yards from Thomond Park, it was always a dream to play for them and to represent Ireland, so I’m delighted to remain a Munster player."

Leamy has joined Earls in signing a new two-year deal which will see him remain with Munster until 2014.

A decade on from making his debut for Munster as a 20-year-old, Leamy has won two Heineken Cup medals as well as being a member of Ireland's Grand Slam-winning squad in 2009.

A hip Injury means he will miss this year's Six Nations but he is delighted to have been handed a new contract by the IRFU.

"I’m delighted that my contract has been sorted and that I can concentrate on getting back on the field as soon as possible," Leamy said.

"I’ve achieved a lot in my career, winning the Six Nations as well as Heineken and Magners League titles, but there is always the desire to try to continue that and achieve even more.

"It also makes it more pleasing to do that with Munster and to remain here in Ireland with my home province."

Leamy has represented Ireland 57 times and has managed to score two tries.
