Ryan denies Corbett rift

by Michelle Fortune , 08 February 2012

Tipperary manager Declan Ryan is hopeful Lar Corbett will decide to prolong his inter-county hurling career once he has time to think about his decision.

Corbett met with Ryan on Monday night to inform him of his intention to withdraw from the Tipperary panel, citing work commitments as the reason for his departure.

His decision has left the hurling world in shock with some claiming Corbett had fallen out with Ryan, something which the manager denies.

"We hold Lar in the highest regard and we value the contribution he has given to Tipperary hurling over the last 11 years," Ryan told Morning Ireland.

"As I said to the players at training, his record over the last three years would be the envy of any forward.

"He had an excellent year in 2010 and last year he again hit a high standard. He may have been disappointed with the way things ended up, but he is not alone there."

There have been calls for Corbett to reconsider and Ryan is hopeful that the All-Ireland winner will reverse his decision in the near future.

“I asked him to reconsider and I gave him some time to think about it," Ryan said. “He said he had been thinking about this for some time and he has come to his decision.

“I suppose everyone in Tipperary hopes that he will change his mind over the coming weeks and that we will see him in the Tipperary set-up again."
