Easy does it for Whisky

by Oli Skehan , 10 February 2012

Having been sent to post the predictably unbackable 1-16 favourite, Nicky Henderson's Oscar Whisky eased to success in the Better Prices On Betfair Mobile 'Jumpers Bumper' at Kempton on Friday.

Next up for the son of Oscar is the Ladbrokes World Hurdle where he will be bidding to dethrone three-time champion and many people's idea of a Cheltenham banker, Big Buck's.

In the hands of Barry Geraghty, the talented seven-year-old travelled strongly on the heels of the leader Milgen Bay, and with a furlong to run he made his move before going on to easily account for the staying-on Sir Harry Ormersher (10-1) by three lengths.

Henderson said: "Barry said to me he was a bit worried when he was 1-14, as that is the same price that Zaynar got beat at Kelso (in the Morebattle Hurdle of 2010), but he went to 1-16 so it was all right.

"Barry reckoned that was the first time they have gone a proper gallop all day, and he thought it rode like the best race.

"This has been useful because we can back off him a bit now, the only other race for him would have been the National Spirit at Fontwell but that was close enough to Cheltenham. It's job done today."

Oscar Whisky was completing a short-priced double on the card for Geraghty and Henderson, who had seen their William Hill Supreme Novices' Hurdle hope Tetlami oblige earlier on the Polytrack.
