Woods five off Pebble Beach lead

by JP Lonergan , 10 February 2012

There is a three-way tie for the lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro Am but, after a good start, Tiger Woods ended the first round five shots off the summit.

Dustin Johnson, Danny Lee and Charlie Wi all carded nine-under-par rounds on day one, with the former duo doing so with 63s at the Pebble Beach Golf Links and Wi playing a 61 on the slightly easier Monterey Country Club course.

Ken Duke and Brian Harman are one shot off the lead after their opening salvos, while four players sit at -6, five at -5 and Woods and Vijay Singh sit among 12 on -4.

Johnson’s 63 at Pebble Links came courtesy of a couple of early birdies and two splendid eagles at the third and the sixth. Another four birdies were recorded after the turn, along with the sole dropped shot of his round which came at 12.

New Zealander Lee, meanwhile, also made two eagles in a flawless round. They came at 11 and two to compliment five birdies, the latter two of which came at five and seven as he finished on the front nine.

On the less taxing Monterey course, Wi made eagle at the sixth along with four pre-turn birdies and three more on the back nine.

Former world number one, and the 2000 winner of this event, Woods took to the Spyglass Hill course, where his short game let him down as opposed to a fine effort at finding the fairways. Two early birdies were countered by a back nine bogey at 13 and he repeated his back nine effort after the turn with three more birdies and a second dropped shot at four for a 68.

"I just wasn't very good with my irons so I'll have to go and work on that. I left a few shots out there for sure," Woods admitted after his round.

"It seems like the rest of the guys are going pretty low around this place. They are just tearing the place apart.

"This (Spyglass Hill) is the hardest of the three (venues) so hopefully the next two days I can get it going.”
