Halfpenny the hero as Wales win

by Tony Cuddihy , 12 February 2012

Leigh Halfpenny amassed a 22-point haul as Wales beat Scotland 27-13 at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday.

The match was scoreless for the opening 23 minutes, Greg Laidlaw missing with Scotland first penalty, but he amends to make it 3-0 to the visitors. Wales had been penalised for playing the ball on the ground in a ruck.

Halfpenny kicked Wales level on the half an hour mark and that's how it remained until half-time, with both sides' defences dominant.

The game exploded into life in the 42nd minute when Wales bagged the first try of the game, Alex Cuthbert bursting through Laidlaw's tackle to go over. Halfpenny added the extras.

A Nic de Luca foul on Jonathan Davies saw a sin binning for the Scotland player and a successful kick for Wales, before another Laidlaw penalty for Scotland brought the score to 13-6.

That started a glut of tries. First, Halfpenny went over after taking a pass from Cuthbert, and he repeated the feat after fine work in the scrum from Toby Faletau and Mike Phillips.

That left Wales 27-6 ahead and Scotland's only consolation came when Laidlow bundled over, before converting his own try.
