West Brom trounce Wolves in derby

by Tony Cuddihy , 12 February 2012

Peter Odemwingie scored a hat-trick as West Brom poured more misery on Mick McCarthy, beating Wolves 5-1 in the Black Country derby at Molineux.

After a goalless opening half an hour, dominated by the away side, the Baggies took the lead through their Nigerian striker.

He was allowed to cut in from the right unopposed and his fierce shot took a deflection off David Edwards and deceived Wayne Hennessey for his sixth goal of the campaign.

Wolves had shown nothing up to that point, so it was a massive surprise when they levelled the match before the half-time whistle.

Steven Fletcher conbined with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake before beating the dive of Ben Foster with his shot on the turn.

Wolves came out fighting in the second half, with Gareth McAuley doing well to cut out a Kevin Doyle cross as Fletcher loitered, but West Brom took the lead again when a goalmouth scramble saw the ball fall to Jonas Olsson. He unleashed a shot that Hennessey couldn't hold, and the ball squirmed over the line.

Roger Johnson then saw his header cleared off the line by Youssuf Mulumbu, but Odemwingie ended the game as a contest when Olsson back-heeled the ball towards goal and the striker took advantage.

Keith Andrews made it 4-1 with a low drive, before Odemwingie completed his treble from a James Morrison cross.
