Duffy earns Republic call-up

by Michelle Fortune , 13 February 2012

Everton defender Shane Duffy has been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for this month's Euro 2012 warm-up against the Czech Republic.

Duffy was omitted from Giovanni Trapattoni's original squad for the February 29 friendly but he has been drafted in as cover for the injured Richard Dunne.

The Aston Villa central defender suffered a fractured right clavicle during his side's 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday and tests have confirmed he will need to undergo surgery and as a result will be sidelined for up to eight weeks.

After being omitted from Trapattoni's 24-man squad Duffy was told that he would be considered for future games if he maintained his club form. He will now join up with the squad for training on February 26.

Duffy was previously called up to the Northern Ireland senior squad under former manager Nigel Worthington but after failing to break into the side he switched allegiances to the Republic of Ireland.

In one of his first appearances for Trapattoni's men, the 20-year-old was rushed to hospital after rupturing his hepatic artery in a training match in May 2010.

He required life-saving surgery and spent several months out of the game before making his return in the same year.
