David Moyes has conceded that Everton's early season displays were simply not good enough but he is delighted with their recent form.
The Toffees boss has admitted that even he wouldn't have paid to watch his team play in the first half of the season and with that in mind, he wasn't surprised by failing attendances.
However, the entertainment levels and crowds at Goodison Park are now on the up after three successive home victories including Saturday's 2-0 success against Chelsea.
That win against the Blues at the weekend has lifted them into tenth place in the Premier League, which is a far cry from where they were in November after a run of five defeats from six matches.
Moyes told The Times: "I don't think we were offering enough to the public or playing well enough.
"The crowds were down - I'd not have come to watch because what I was giving the supporters wasn't enough.
"I needed to find another solution but that has to come with an understanding of who we're playing, what tactics we have to use.
"So I had to do it for that reason and in the main we have found a way of winning. I knew that in the summer but I was unable to do so. I said it was going to be a real tough year for us, and it is still."
The arrival of loan signing Steven Pienaar, who opened the scoring against Chelsea, and fellow January recruits Landon Donovan and Darron Gibson have made a significant impact.
Special mention should also be made for close-season signing Denis Stracqualursi, who's energy and non-stopped running, was eventually rewarded with the Toffees' second goal of the game.
