No action over handshake row

by Michelle Fortune , 13 February 2012

The Football Association has decided not to take any action against Manchester United and Liverpool for several incidents during their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Luis Suarez's refusal to shake Patrice Evra's hand prior to kick-off heightened the tension at Old Trafford and as the players made their way down the tunnel at half-time there was a bust-up, resulting in the stewards and police rushing to bringing calm to the situation.

After the final whistle the Liverpool players were escorted down the tunnel, while referee Phil Dowd spoke to Evra for his celebrations in front of Suarez.

The FA reviewed video evidence but decided against taking any action against the clubs, although they plan to speak to both Manchester United and Liverpool about the future conduct of their players.

Meanwhile Liverpool's shirt sponsors have expressed their concerns over Suarez's refusal to shake Evra's hand.

There has been widespread condemnation of Suarez's behaviour, resulting in both the striker and manager Kenny Dalglish to issue an apology, but there could be repercussions for the club after Standard Chartered voiced their concern to the Reds.

"We were very disappointed by Saturday's incident and have discussed our concerns with the club," the bank said in a statement.
