Kean hails his bargain buy

by Setanta Staff , 13 February 2012 Rovers chief hails his bargain buy

Steve Kean claims Yakubu has been one of the bargain buys of the season after he scored his 14th goal of the campaign for Blackburn.

The Rovers chief took a slight gamble in the summer transfer window when he paid Everton £1.5million for the 29-year-old Nigerian hitman, who had struggled for form and fitness during his time at Goodison Park.

However, Yakubu has been a revelation at Ewood Park and continued his form in front of goal as he returned from a three-match suspension to fire Rovers in front just 15 minutes into Saturday's crucial 3-2 win against fellow strugglers QPR on Saturday.

Steven N'Zonzi and Junior Hoilett also struck for Rovers, before Jamie Mackie's second half brace made the score-line a lot closer.

But Kean was quick to hail the impact Yakubu has had on Rovers this season, claiming his signing and Newcastle's acquisition of 17-goal striker Demba Ba are the stand-out bargain buys.

He told the Lancashire Telegraph: "I think it's probably been the Yak and Demba Ba.

"When you add together what those two have cost in comparison to some other strikers, then they have been the bargains of the season.

"Both have done really well. The mark of a goalscorer is his goal ratio, it's not really how many games but how many chances does he get to score goals?

"If you look back at the goals the Yak's scored this season, he's not missed too many.

"His chances to goal ratio would be right amongst the best."
