Cook determied to push on

by Setanta Staff , 14 February 2012

England captain Alastair Cook is refusing to get too far ahead of himself despite England's victory over Pakistan in the first ODI.

The Essex man was at his very best on Monday, making a superb 137 as England pulled off victory by 130 runs to go 1-0 up in the four-match series.

It was the first international victory by the tourists on their current trip to the UAE after they went down 3-0 to Misbah ul-Haq's men in the Test series.

Pakistan have an excellent one-day side on paper but question marks remain about the depth of the batting if they lose early wickets.

And that is exactly what happened in the series opener, with giant paceman Steve Finn destroying the top order to finish with 4-32.

Samit Patel took three wickets in a solid all-round bowling display, while the Asian side showed little stomach for the fight after being put under pressure.

The players will do it all again at the same Abu Dhabi venue on Wednesday and Cook is determined that his charges will keep their feet on the ground and give themselves the best opportunity of going 2-0 up in the series.

"It's only one game, so let's not get too carried away too much about everything," he said. "It was a really good performance, and we'll enjoy tonight and the feeling of winning the game and make sure we come back as a side on Wednesday."
