‘Gooch’ confirms widespread interest

by Robin Hackett , 14 May 2009

Reported Birmingham and Wolves target Oguchi Onyewu has confirmed several clubs have shown interest.

The Standard Liege defender, 27, had a loan spell with Newcastle in 2007 and recent rumours have suggested newly-promoted Birmingham and Wolves are now interested in bringing him back to England.

And while the £3 million-rated US international only confirmed that Marseille have been in contact, he revealed he could have several options this summer.

"The club spoke to me, yes, but Marseille are not the only ones to show interest,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.

“I will listen to all approaches and take my time to make a decision.”

Onyewu accepts that he may not be guaranteed first-team football if he leaves Standard, but he says it is not a significant concern.

"I am ready to take that risk," he said.

"It would not be the first time. When I arrived at Standard, I was third choice.

“Even at La Louviere [in 2003], I was not in the team."

Bundesliga side Borussia Moenchengladbach have also been linked with the player.
