Premier League newboys alerted to Reading cull

by Ben Blackmore , 15 May 2009

Wolves, Birmingham and plenty of other Premier League clubs will have been alerted by Reading’s decision to release Leroy Lita.

The Royals are releasing four big names after missing out on the Championship play-off final to Burnley.

Michael Duberry, Marcus Hahnemann, Graeme Murty and Leroy Lita have all been told to find other clubs as Reading prepare for another season outside of the top flight.

Lita was once the top striker for England’s Under-21s, and he is likely to attract plenty of Premier League attention as a tempting free transfer.

"The players who are leaving will all be sorely missed, but this week has seen the end of an era and it's time for the club to move on,” Reading director of football Nick Hammond revealed.

"It was important for us to resolve the issue of our out-of-contract players quickly, which now allows us to focus all our energies on recruiting the right manager to replace Steve Coppell.

"Graeme Murty and Marcus Hahnemann were key members of the team throughout Steve Coppell's managerial reign, and they will both forever hold a significant place in the club's history.

"Leroy Lita's goals in his first season at the club played a vital role in propelling us towards the Premier League, and Michael Duberry has been an important player for us in the last couple of years.

"I'd like to sincerely thank them for all their efforts and wish them well for the future."

Meanwhile, Birmingham have confirmed the release of teenage goalkeeper Artur Krysiak.

Academy manager Terry Westley said: "We couldn't guarantee that we wouldn't be in a very similar position next season in terms of Artur having to go out on loan again."
