Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish plans to bring in about four players this summer, with defenders his main concern.
The Midlands club secured promotion from The Championship with a second-place finish and are looking to build a squad capable of staying in England’s top-flight.
And the former Rangers manager could raid The SPL for a few additions with Bobo Balde and Kris Boyd potential targets, but he has ruled out a move for Madjid Bougherra.
“I look at every situation when a player can bring us in a bit of quality but right now my priority is centre backs,” McLeish said.
“The budget is not limitless and I still have to be prudent in the market so if there’s money around after I get the priorities then you never know.
“Boyd has certainly been on the radar for a long time but at the moment that is not imminent.”
He added: “We don’t want to talk about it publicly but we extended an invite to Bobo to train with us and that’s as far as it has gone.
“We don’t know if that will happen, he’s got internationals in the summer and I’m pursuing legitimate targets. Bobo looks like he will be a free agent, so I have to look at every opportunity I can get.”
When asked about the former Charlton defender Bougherra, McLeish believes he will not be able to afford the Algeria international.
The former Aberdeen defender explained: “He’s done well but I would expect Rangers to ask for a high fee for him and that is probably too much for what we can afford at the moment.
“I need to spread my budget to three or four players and Bougherra will probably be too expensive.”
