Stoke say 'no substance' to Scholes reports

by Joseph Caron Dawe , 31 May 2009

Stoke chairman Peter Coates has dismissed out of hand reports linking the club with a move for Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes.

It had been suggested last week that The Potters were eyeing a potential swoop for the veteran Red Devils player, with a player-coach role on offer.

However, Coates has laughed off the speculation, insisting there has been no talk of Scholes coming to The Britannia Stadium, let alone movement on the matter.

“I know nothing about it and neither does Tony Pulis. I haven’t spoke to Tony Pulis yet, but I doubt he knows anything about it either,” said Coates.

“I spoke to Tony on Thursday and we discussed nothing of that kind. We know what players we are looking for and who we want.

“When I speak to Tony, we talk about players coming in and players going out. I don’t know where this story has come from, but there is no substance to it.”
