Wigan denied permission for Martinez talks

by Robin Hackett , 03 June 2009

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins says he has refused Wigan permission to speak to boss Roberto Martinez as they have been unable to agree compensation.

Sunderland were reported to be on the brink of clinching a deal to take Steve Bruce to the Stadium of Light on Wednesday morning and Martinez is thought to be Wigan’s top choice to replace him.

However, although they have asked to speak to Martinez, Jenkins has revealed the two clubs are some distance apart in their valuation of the manager.

"Wigan asked for permission to speak to Roberto,” he said.

“They asked what compensation we would be looking for and we talked about different figures.

"I told them what I valued Roberto at and they told me what they thought. We were miles apart to say the least.

"I have not given them permission to talk to Roberto."

Celtic have also been strongly linked with Martinez and the Spaniard was quoted this week as saying he would welcome the chance to take over at Parkhead.

However, he insists the quotations were fabricated as he has not responded to the speculation.

"No quotes from me are true because I have not spoken to the press," Martinez told the Western Mail.
