Carew taking City link as a compliment

by Robin Hackett , 04 June 2009

Aston Villa striker John Carew says he is flattered to be linked with a move to Manchester City but insists it is just speculation.

Reports have claimed that Mark Hughes is lining up a move for the 29-year-old Norway international after giving up on long-term target Roque Santa Cruz.

However, although he is happy about the rumours, Carew says he is giving the story little consideration at the moment.

“I am not thinking too much about this,” he said in Nettavisen. “There is always speculation.

“I would take it as a compliment if they are interested, but I am not spending much time thinking about it.

“For me, it is just speculation and I never respond to speculation.”

Asked if he had heard anything official from his club, he said: “No, but even if I had heard anything I wouldn’t speak about it!”

Gareth Barry recently made the move from Villa Park to Eastlands, but Carew insists he was not surprised to see him leave.

“We knew he was going to go,” he said.

“It wasn’t like it was a bombshell – it was always on the cards.

“But, still, he is a difficult player to replace.”
