Setanta's end-of-season awards: Fulham

by setanta.com staff , 05 June 2009

Like Darius Vassell's England career, the season is well and truly over, so it's time to dish out the end-of-season gongs.

Who made the difference in your club's season? Who lived up to all expectations like a sausage sandwich after a big night out? And who flopped like Pele without viagra?

Below, the setanta.com office has joined forces to pick our success stories and disappointments of a quite gripping campaign, feel free to congratulate us on our genius or destroy us for our cluelessness using the comments box below.

FULHAM

Player of the season: Brede Hangeland
A tower of strength, no pun intended, as Hangeland marshalled Fulham's defence superbly. He may not be the most fashionable of defenders, but boy is he effective and European football should see him stay at the club.

Young player of the season: N/A
Fulham's official site gave their young player of the year award to Clint Dempsey. As he is 26 it speaks volumes as to the lack of youth in the Fulham camp.

Best signing: Mark Schwarzer
The Aussie opted to move on from Milllesbrough last summer following 11 seasons on Teesside and it proved to be an astute move as while Boro were relegated, the keeper helped Fulham secure a place in Europe.

Worst signing: Giles Barnes
Barnes joined on loan from Derby in January, with The Rams handed a sizeable fee. The move was with a view to a permanent deal, but seen as Barnes did not see any action and was sent back to Derby in May, it was not the cleverest bit of business.

Disappointment of the season: FA Cup defeat to Man Utd
There were few low points in a season of real success for Fulham, but defeat to United in the quarter finals left a feeling of one that got away. The Cottagers had home advantage against a side who had bigger fish to fry, but they were thumped 4-0.

Moment of the campaign: Securing European football
The Cottagers may have tasted defeat on the final day to Everton but it mattered not one jot as Spurs' loss to Liverpool guaranteed them a spot in Europe which came courtesy of their highest ever league finish.
