Pompey still dreaming of Arabian nights

by Tom Kell , 11 June 2009

A spokesman for Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim admits his proposed takeover of Portsmouth remains up in the air.

Al-Fahim, who was the initial figurehead of the Abu Dhabi United Group when they rode into Manchester City last year, had a bid accepted for Pompey late last month.

News of the Arabian property tycoon’s pending arrival prompted suggestions of lavish spending on the South Coast despite the need for legal and financial details to be completed.

Manager Paul Hart remains only in temporary charge as manager and it seems that the club’s ownership is equally in limbo as Al-Fahim seeks to hurry along the minutiae of the transaction.

"What I can tell you is that the timescale hoped to complete due diligence [will be] in the course of July," said Ivo Ilic Gabara, a spokesman for Al-Fahim.

"Any process is open to any outcome. The due diligence process is a serious process after which the two parties decide whether to complete the understanding reached [under] the memorandum of understanding.

"But then you have accountants, lawyers, the other party – how can you control whether the other party [the current owner, Alexandre Gaydamak] at the end of due diligence is still going to be interested in selling?

“What I can say is that Al-Fahim very much wants to complete the process and sees a great future for the club."

The hold up in negotiations has led to accusations that Fahim’s initial approach was nothing more than a publicity stunt.

"Certainly not,” said Gabara. “Whoever spoke about a stunt? He was engaged to broker the deal [with City] which he did very successfully.

“This is a very serious [transaction] that also has social implications for the club and its fans for which Al Fahim has given serious and thorough consideration."
