Storrie rules out summer splurge

by Toby Davis , 18 June 2009

Portsmouth fans expecting a summer spending spree are likely to be disappointed after executive chairman Peter Storrie claimed there would be no big-money arrivals.

Sulaiman Al Fahim is on the verge of completing his takeover of the club with the process of due diligence likely to be completed by early next month.

But his arrival will not herald a new era of indulgent spending, according to Storrie, who claims Al Fahim has a long-term view when it comes to investment.

With Glen Johnson’s £18 million switch to Liverpool likely to be completed shortly, the club will have money to spend.

But Storrie says cash will be invested in developing the infrastructure of the club as well as on new signings.

“Al Fahim wants to get the deal done as quickly as possible. We all do,” he told the Portsmouth News.

“He's a nice guy who wants so much for the club and I know will do a lot for it – the fans can be assured of that.

“But he is not going to spend, spend, spend immediately on players. We are not in a rush.

“We are not going to splash out £40, 50, 60m this summer, that's not how Al Fahim wants to do things.

“Instead, he wants to spend money over the next couple of years.

“It's not just the playing side which interests him, he is very much interested in the academy, in the study centre, in the community office, every aspect of the club.

“He loves the club and has been very impressed with everything he has seen at Fratton Park.

“But he wants to be involved in improving everything, not just the playing side of things.

“It is going to take time, he is in this for the long haul, believe me.”
