Pompey confirm high-profile departures

by Tom Adams , 19 June 2009

Portsmouth have confirmed that Sean Davis and Jermaine Pennant will be leaving the club but executive chairman Peter Storrie does hope to retain the services of Hermann Hreidarsson, Sol Campbell and Niko Kranjcar.

Pompey may be without a manager and in the midst of a takeover, but the club’s squad for next season is still taking shape and the headline news is that of Davis’s departure.

The midfielder, who joined the club from Tottenham in January 2006 before making 102 league appearances for Pompey, will depart Fratton Park having turned down the offer of a new contract. Bolton are now believed to be ready to sign Davis.

Pompey have further decided against pursuing a permanent deal for Jermaine Pennant who joined the club on loan from Liverpool in January and made nine Premier League starts for the South Coast side.

However, reported Rangers and Celtic target Hreidarsson has been offered a new one-year deal

“Hermann has been offered a year's contract, while Sean Davis has turned his down and will be leaving,” Storrie told the Portsmouth News.

“The rest of them have all gone. I don't think that will surprise too many people.

“We also will not be following up Jermaine Pennant, he will not be joining us permanently.

“A lot of these decisions were not hard to make. A lot of these players weren't featuring in the team so it was best they moved on.

“I don't think anyone will be shocked.”

Regarding captain Campbell, Storrie is awaiting further discussions with the former Arsenal defender having attempted to secure him to a new agreement.

“With Sol there is definitely no contract at the moment, We've held talks but Sol is currently on holiday and we are waiting for him to return so we can meet again.”

Niko Kranjcar is another player who has been frequently linked with an exit from Fratton Park but Storrie is confident of keeping the Croatian playmaker out of the clutches of interested parties.

“Niko is happy to stay. He's a quality player. Maybe we can persuade him to stay here longer.”
