England seal series whitewash

by Alex Livie , 18 May 2009

England wrapped up a series whitewash over West Indies to reclaim The Wisden Trophy.

England overwhelmed the tourists in the first Test at Lord’s and it was a similar story at The Riverside.

A whole day was lost to rain, but such was England’s dominance that they were able to wrap up an innings victory on the afternoon of the fifth day.

England started the day requiring seven wickets for victory, but any hopes of early inroads were dented by some solid batting from Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Lendl Simmons and a couple of rain delays.

Simmons fell to James Anderson, offering a catch at point to substitute Scott Borhwick and the breakthrough prompted a fall of wickets.

Tim Bresnan has been underused in the series, but he claimed his first wicket in the Test arena when Brendan Nash was caught by Borthwick at midwicket.

Bresnan removed Dinesh Ramdin with a fine away swinger that caught the edge of the bat and was snaffled at slip by Anderson.

Ramdin’s departure left Chanderpaul with the tail, but not even the Guyanese could stave off defeat.

Chanderpaul became Anderson’s fourth victim when stand-in keeper Paul Collingwood took a simple catch and Bresnan wrapped up the game by an innings and 73 runs when Fidel Edwards was caught at fine leg.

The victory lifts England up to fifth place in the world rankings and puts them on a sound footing ahead of the Ashes series with Australia in July.
