Kevin Pietersen has moved to quell speculation that he could miss the Ashes through injury by insisting that his absence from the NatWest Series against the West Indies is a “precautionary” measure.
The South African-born batsman is suffering from a minor Achilles problem that has forced him to sit out the three-match Series, which starts in Headingley on Thursday.
Pitersen sustained the injury in the comprehensive Test win over the West Indies at Chester-le-Street and alarm bells were immediately raised with the Ashes just seven weeks away.
The 28-year-old admitted his frustration at missing the ODI series but insisted it was a necessary precaution to ensure his fitness later this summer.
"Although I'm frustrated to be leaving a happy and successful dressing room I'm absolutely confident this will help me overcome what has up until now been a minor ongoing injury," said Pietersen."
“I hate missing out on playing for England but understand that in this instance it's necessary."
