Wade's delight at title

by Nick Royle , 26 May 2009

James Wade expressed his delight after beating Mervyn King at the Wembley Arena on Monday to win the darts’ Premier League.

Wade opened up a 7-0 lead in the final of the Whyte and Mackay Premier League play-offs but King brought the score back to 8-6.

However, the 26-year-old recovered his game to record a 13-8 victory with a final double top, and win the £125,000 first prize.

King will feel he had done the hard work in the semi-final by beating Phil Taylor and denying the world number one a fifth successive title.

Wade told Sky Sports: "It's fantastic. I didn't beat Mervyn once in qualifying round so to beat him in the final - I'm chuffed to bits.

"The money's way back there in the distance - to win a tournament where you are playing with the top eight players in the world is unbelievable.

"I said I need to win another TV tournament this year - here it is. It's one of the best ones to win, if not the best."
