Pragyan Ojha’s 4-21 restricted Bangladesh to 155-8 in pursuit of India's 180-5 from their 20 overs.
Yuvraj Singh crashed a whirlwind 41 to rekindle the Indian innings at Trent Bridge.
This late hitting was necessary after Bangladesh held their own in the field with opener Gautam Gambhir finding the boundary just four times in his innings of 50.
The big-hitting Mehendra Singh Dhoni [26] landed one six while Rohit Sharma provided able support at the top of the innings with 36.
Yuvraj cashed in with four sixes and three fours from only 18 deliveries before being caught off the bowling of Shahadat Hossain.
Bangladesh made a frantic start to their run-chase with Junaid Siddique, dropped on 19 by Ishant Sharma, cracking three sixes before he was dismissed for 41 off the bowling of Ojha in his first over.
The spinner also claimed Mohammad Mahmudullah [8] in his first over to crucially put the brakes on Bangladesh's response.
Naeem Islam [28] provided resistance at the bottom of the order before India disposed of him to win this Group A encounter.
