Tursunov wins Eastbourne title

by Nick Royle , 20 June 2009

Russian Dmitry Tursunov became the first men's champion of the AEGON International at Eastbourne on Saturday.

However, the second seed suffered an ankle injury in his 6-3 7-6 win over Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic, an injury that could affect his Wimbledon chances.

There was only one break in the first set, and only one opportunity in the second set for break points after a pair of Dancevic two double faults, though the Canadian was able to hold onto serve.

Tursunov had his ankle taped before the tiebreak, but the Russian was able to come through on his second match point.

The Russian had surgery recently to remove bone spurs on his ankle but confirmed Saturday's injury was a new problem.

"It is a completely different thing, it feels more like a tendon.

"I am definitely going to try to come out [to play at Wimbledon], unless I am going to be on crutches. Even then I will try to come out!”
