Hickey: Cats have no need for GPA

by GAA Staff , 01 November 2009

The Gaelic Players Association is of little benefit to the Kilkenny players because they are "well looked after" by the county board and team management.

That is the view of Cats defender Noel Hickey, who has hit out at Cork's Donal Og Cusack's claim that Kilkenny are not committed to the GPA.

In his autobiography Cusack accused Kilkenny of being the "GAA's version of the Stepford Wives" and questioned their lack of commitment to the players association, but Hickey insists the Leinster champions have no need for the organisation.

Hickey believes the way the panel are looked after by the team management means there they do not have to go running to the GPA for guidance and support.

"In Kilkenny, since I joined the panel, I never knew what was going on in other counties or what the issues were," Hickey is quoted as saying in the Irish News Of The World.

"I know here in Kilkenny team we are looked after well. We never had any reason to do anything with the GPA. I don't really know the ins and outs of it all. Just here in Kilkenny, we are all looked after well."

Meanwhile, the seven-time All-Ireland winner insists Kilkenny still value the Leinster Championship and is not sure if an open draw is the best way to shake-up the hurling championship.

Speculation is gathering that proposals will be put forward at Congress in April to do away with the provincial championships in favour of an open draw, but Hickey is not convinced that would be the best solution.

"At the moment it works well. I know you always have to keep things changed and that, but, in Kilkenny, we would still value the Leinster Championship," he added.

"I know they do in Munster. I don't really know what they are plotting and planning, but it will be interesting to see what comes out."
