McGeegan ready to quit Saffrons

by GAA Staff , 06 November 2009

Karl McGeegan has intimated he will not return for another year wit the Antrim hurlers, despite the return of Dinny Cahill as manager.

McGeegan has been part of the Saffrons panel for eight years but has grown frustrated at the "lack of commitment" from certain members of the squad and would only be prepared to go back if he felt he was not wasting his time.

"I don't know whether I want to go back for another year," McGeegan told the Irish News. "We put a lot in last year, but after the Dublin game everything fell flat. Wee things started to annoy me and I said then that I definitely wouldn't be going back next year.

"I was probably going training at times and not putting in the required effort, which was probably wrong on my part. And maybe the younger boys felt I wasn't putting the effort in.

"I'm 31 now and if I was to go back everyone would have to be committed because I wouldn't want to be wasting my time. I still think I have something to offer, but I'm probably more swayed to not going back."

Cahill managed Antrim from 2002-2004 and has returned to the helm of the senior hurling panel, but McKeegan is unsure if he will get the same level of commitment from the squad this time around.

"I remember we had a lot of boys very, very committed when Dinny came up last time. Whether he can get that again I'm not sure, because what I've seen over the last couple of years some players aren't prepared to put the hard work in," McKeegan added.
