O'Sullivan: Inter-Pro deserves respect

by GAA Staff , 06 November 2009

Munster football manager Ger O'Sullivan wants the GAA to give greater consideration to the Inter-Provincial Series, claiming the timing of the competition is all wrong.

Sunday's final will be contested by Munster and Ulster but O'Sullivan believes the schedule puts unnecessary pressure on players who are already trying involved in cluv competitions.

"You could not have a worse time of year to find players who have the time to give to this competition," O'Sullivan is quoted as saying in the Irish Mirror.

"Yet many of these players have made exceptional efforts and may sacrifices to give me the commitment for these games. Once the All-Ireland is over players all over the country are caught up in many important club fixtures.

"I don't think it's fair that these pressures are being pt on players to represent their province. They do so because they want t to win one of those very unique Railway Cup medals."

If the GAA is to make the series a genuine success O'Sullivan has urged the organisation to give it a better slot in the calendar and to promote it to ensure bigger attendances.

"I believe the GAA should make a genuine effort to give the Inter-Provincial series a proper date in the calendar.

"This is about keeping a part of the GAA history going and at the same time giving players from other counties a chance of winning a prestigious medal they would otherwise not have a chance to.

"The GAA say that attendances have been small at these games but the whole thing has not been marketed at all. If the public were made aware of the quality players who do play in these then I'm sure the public would respond.

"My message to the GAA is to give some serious commitment to the series."
