Foley leaves Trap with a tough call

by Gareth Maher , 30 May 2009

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni will have a tough call to make on who plays right-back in next week's World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria.

Kevin Foley skipped right up to the top of the queue with a fine display in the friendly match with Nigeria, while Paul McShane and Stephen Kelly are the other players competing for that place.

It is a position that the Ireland boss needs to address, as Steve Finnan remains unavailable through injury and it has proved to be a weak link in the chain during the course of this qualifying campaign.

McShane was given a torrid time in the 1-1 draw with Italy, while the manager's confidence in Kelly appears to have waned ever since he made a costly error in the 2-1 win over Georgia.

Foley may have only just made his debut, but he could be the ideal candidate to keep tabs on Bulgarian winger Martin Petrov and ensure that the right side of defence is rock solid.

After coming through an excellent season with Wolverhampton Wanderers, the 24-year-old will be hoping to stay in the Ireland having finally made his debut in a friendly match against Nigeria.

He will be playing in the Premier League next season and his aim is to also be featuring regularly for his country. Despite a mix up that led to Nigeria's goal, he can be pleased with how he played and Trapattoni indicated afterwards that he was impressed with how the player did.

So will the Ireland boss pick a player with only one senior cap to start in his team's most important World Cup qualifier so far?

Well, it would be a mistake to stick with McShane, who is very vulnerable at international level in a position that is not his best, while Kelly has not played much football this year with injury and a baffling loan spell with Stoke City restricting his time on the pitch.

Foley, although a new player in the side, would be the safest option. He can hold the line, stick with his marker, link-up with the winger in front of him, stay on the same wavelength as his fellow defenders, and get forward to contribute to counter attacks.

It will be very interesting to see what team Mr. Trapattoni selects. At least his options at right-back are a lot better than they were when he first took over the job.
