Strachan leaves with his head held high

by John Hartson , 25 May 2009

Gordon Strachan leaves Celtic with his head held high, he’s done a fantastic job winning three titles. What people must remember is that if Celtic had won their last two games of this season, they’d have won the title again.

Gordon’s a great guy and a fantastic manager. There is no doubt he’ll walk straight back into a job and a very good job at that. I’d like to wish him well because he’s been fantastic for the club – his record speaks for itself.

I saw it coming, the fans have got their wish. I feel sad for Gordon but not that sad because it’s been very difficult working in the circumstances he has, with regard to how the fans felt towards him.

The writing was on the wall because Gordon was hated by the Celtic support. I can’t speak for the Celtic supporters – they are phenomenal – but the majority wanted Strachan out. A lot of them weren’t going to renew their season tickets for next year.

He’s left because everyone wants to be happy going into work every day. You want to be liked and loved and in the end it was just very, very difficult for him. The fans turned on him and they have got their wish.

They will now want a big say in who becomes the next manager. It’s not a criticism of the fans because they are unbelievable but they just didn’t take to Gordon from day one.

They respect the job he’s done – they’d be fools not to – and he’s brought good players to the club. Admittedly, he’s brought bad players to the club but who hasn’t made bad signings? That goes with the territory. In general, Celtic have made bad strides under him.

It’s not the right time to discuss what Gordon will do now. He’s very sought after and a fabulous manager – I worked under him at Coventry and he’s great to work for. He’s the hardest-working manager I’ve ever played for in terms of being on the training ground every single day.

He’s so, so enthusiastic and all his players are so, so fit. He’s a great manager and would be a great appointment for any club, and I mean any club. He will walk into a job, believe me.
