Stenson promises greatness

I've been saying for a while that Henrik Stenson holds the ability to challenge for Major honours on the golfing circuit, and feel vindicated by the Swede's performance at TPC Sawgrass on Sunday.

While those around him were wilting under the pressure of a course that was running much faster than anticipated, Stenson was bringing a discipline, a control to his game that had only been caught in glimpses previously.

To watch him obliterate the lead of Alex Cejka was a great thing to behold. Nothing personal against the German, you understand, more the sight of a young player finally announcing himself after near misses at the 2008 Open and PGA Championships.

His consecutive birdies at the 15th and 16th holes, in particular, spoke of a talent coming to fruition and the feeling is that Stenson's stated aim - to win one of the four biggest tournaments on the golf calendar - will come true before long, and you don't reach fifth in the world without the promise of something great.
