Hughes: Ignore Blues' plight
by Tom Kell, 09 May 2008
Mark Hughes is urging his Blackburn side to make sure they do not become embroiled in goings on elsewhere on the final day of the season and instead concentrate on ensuring they take three points from Birmingham.
Rovers still have an outside chance of playing European football next season, but are relying on West Ham to do them a favour against Aston Villa in the race for The Intertoto Cup.
Blues need a win themselves if they are to have any chance of avoiding relegation, but Hughes insists his side must focus on only themselves.
“It’s important we don’t get wrapped up in their situation,” he said. “We’ve just got to go there, get our job done and make sure we attain what we want.
“Everybody is aware of Birmingham’s plight. It’s going to be a very difficult day for them, irrespective of what we do.
“It’s a big game for both clubs. Obviously we’re aiming for that Intertoto spot, which a lot of people didn’t think we were going to get anywhere near, but we’ve kept going and other people have fallen by the wayside.
“I think we’ve had something like two defeats in eighteen games, so we’re on a great run. There is a lot riding on this game, it’s a really important fixture for both clubs.”
