Rooney doubt for title decider

Rooney: Doubt

Wayne Rooney is doubtful for Manchester United’s match at Wigan on Sunday but will be fit for the Champions League final against Chelsea.

Rooney has been dogged by a persistent hip problem and may miss out against Wigan, in a match United must win if they are to see off the challenge of Chelsea and guarantee the title.

However Sir Alex Ferguson expects Rooney to have recovered fully from the injury in time to play against Chelsea at the Luzhniki stadium on May 21.

"I am not so sure about Wayne," said Ferguson.

"Maybe I will have him as a substitute on Sunday. But he will certainly be fit for the Champions League final."

The England international has been favouring his hip since sustaining the injury in a collision with Ryan Nelsen at Blackburn in mid April.

Nemanja Vidic has also been in the wars recently, but Ferguson expects the Serbian, who suffered concussion and a laceration to his lip against Chelsea, to play against Wigan.

"We are very hopeful of Nemanja being fit," said Ferguson.

"He is clear medically, so the next two training sessions will be very important.

"But he is much better and hopefully I can get him right for Sunday."

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“United deserved the title. why can't everyone see that? Why are there all the recriminations from TV and people on here? It was a clear penalty and the rio incident one wasn't. Yes, scholes could've been sent off but how many times do you see the ref show leniency in such situations? Chelsea couldn't even win anyway so any argument is completely moot.”
