United secure League title

Manchester United's 2-0 victory at Wigan ensured they won their tenth Premier League title, while Chelsea drew at home to Bolton and Fulham won at Portsmouth to stay up.

The goals at the JJB Stadium came from a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty and a late strike from Ryan Giggs, on the day the latter equalled Sir Bobby Charlton's appearance record.

Elsewhere, Chelsea seemed to be heading for victory thanks to Andriy Shevchenko's close range effort until Bolton's late equaliser from Matt Taylor.

At Fratton Park, Danny Murphy's late header insured that Fulham stayed up at the expense of Reading and Birmingham, who both hit four in victories over Derby and Blackburn respectively.

Yakubu score twice as Everton beat Blackburn 3-1 to ensure The Toffees sealed fifth place.

West Ham drew with Aston Villa two-apiece thanks to a fantastic late strike from Dean Ashton, while another England hopeful Theo Walcott scored the only goal at the Stadium of Light where Arsenal edged Sunderland.

Finally, in an incredible game at The Riverside, Afonso Alves bagged his first hat-trick for Middlesbrough as they thrashed Manchester City 8-1 in Sven Goran Eriksson's last game in charge.

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“Storm in a tea cup. Dementieva's English isn't 100% and her comments have been totally misinterpreted. There was no suggestion of a fix at all. All she meant was that the championship would be decided between the sisters. Not that Serena or Venus would conspire to fix the result. Lost in translation anyone?”
