Smith disappointed but proud
by Ben Blackmore, 14 May 2008
Rangers boss Walter Smith had no complaints after the Glaswegian giants were beaten 2-0 by Zenit St Petersburg in the final of the Uefa Cup.
Gers were second best for the majority of the match and they finally yielded to Zenit with less than 20 minutes remaining as Igor Denisov and Konstatin Zurianov struck.
In the end, Rangers’ 19th game of a massive European campaign proved one step too far, but Smith was left with a great deal of pride at what his men had achieved.
"Over the tournament we've worked very hard to get to the final - there was not that much in it overall and we had a few chances ourselves," Smith told ITV1.
"Zenit looked the more offensive team but obviously at this stage I'm disappointed to have lost.
"We've had a terrific tournament - it doesn't take away the disappointment but in the end I can have no complaints."
"You don't get the opportunity very often to get to European finals and when you do it's very disappointing to lose."
