With the Champions League final against Chelsea just six days away, Rio Ferdinand has handed Manchester United a pre-Moscow boost by penning a new five-year contract at Old Trafford.
The defender has excelled for The Red Devils this season, captaining the side on numerous occasions in Gary Neville’s absence and winning a place in the PFA Team of the Year after helping United retain the Premier League title.
Ferdinand will marshal the defence alongside partner Nemanja Vidic in Moscow and after the Champions League final will be tied to the North West giants until June 2013.
“I am delighted Rio has signed a new contract,” manager Sir Alex Ferguson told the club’s official website.
“Rio’s contribution this season has been a major factor in our outstanding defensive performance.
“Rio has matured into his role at the club and has shown, when needed, what a great captain and leader he can be”
Ferdinand follows fellow defender Wes Brown in signing a new contract and midfielder Michael Carrick has also agreed fresh terms with the club after impressing again this season.
After making 265 appearances for United and winning three league titles since his record-breaking £30 million move from Leeds in 2002, Ferdinand has now targeted winning yet more silverware at England’s second most decorated club.
“Manchester United is a fantastic club and I am delighted I have signed a new contract,” said Ferdinand.
“It is a great honour to be part of this trophy winning team and to share in the success, which I am sure, will continue for many seasons to come.
“I would like to thank the manager, the coaching staff, the players and the fans for the tremendous support they have given me since I joined the club.”
