Alexander: All focus back on SPL
by Joseph Caron Dawe, 15 May 2008
Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander said his side could ‘hold their heads high’ after their Uefa Cup final defeat at the hands of Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday evening.
The Gers went down 2-0 at The City of Manchester Stadium to second-half goals from Igor Denisov and Konstatin Zurianov after holding out for some 72 minutes, and Alexander believes Walter Smith’s men can take pride from their endeavours in the competition.
However, the Scotland international maintains his side must now turn their focus to Saturday’s trip to Motherwell, where they continue their quest for the SPL title.
“We can walk away with our heads held high,” said Alexander on Setanta Sports News. “It was a tough game tonight and they’re a very good team.
“I thought we showed a lot of character and played well. We frustrated them, we defended really well, [and] passed the ball good. But just in that final third maybe we didn’t create the clearcut chance that could have given us a goal.
“We had two half chances, but nothing extreme.
“So yes, we’re disappointed but we’ve got a massive game on Saturday coming up now. We have to get over this disappointment and look forward to Saturday.”
