Andy Murray will face Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of the Toronto Masters after seeing off Stanislas Wawrinka on Thursday evening.
The British number one eased through the first set, dropping just two games, and appeared to be cruising to victory over the Swiss Ace. However, Wawrinka battled back and took the second set to love, only for Murray to hit back in the third.
Wawrinka took the first game of the decider and Murray needed to save two break points in the second before finally taking the game.
The set then with serve until the seventh game when Murray got the crucial break to move clear and he consolidated his advantage by holding Wawrinka to love to seal his 6-2 0-6 6-4 victory.
Djokovic overcame a potential banana skin in Robin Soderling 6-4 6-4 and the Serb admitted he was struck by nerves at the start of the match.
"It was a great win - another straight sets win. I felt really comfortable on the court," he said.
"I did everything I needed to do, although at the start of the match I was quite nervous.
"I had some ups and downs with the serve, but it is not easy when you play against a powerful player with a great serve. It puts a lot of pressure on you."
Murray and Djokovic will meet on Friday and should the Briton overcome the world number three he faces the prospect of taking on Rafael Nadal in the semi-final.
The Wimbledon champion continued his progress with a 6-2 7-3 win over Russian Igor Andreev and he face Richard Gasquet in the quarter-final.
Elsewhere, there were wins for Gilles Simon, James Blake and Nicolas Kiefer.
