Weir revels in wet conditions
by Richard Field, 25 July 2008
Canadian Open joint-first round clubhouse leader Mike Weir said the soft conditions helped the scoring at a rain-hit Glen Abbey course.
The home favourite carved out a 65 to co-lead with Anthony Kim and Eric Axley in Ontario.
A huge storm caused a suspension of just under six hours which means nearly half the field will have to return on Friday morning to complete their opening rounds.
“Obviously, with the green being soft, you can fly the ball right to the hole and it would stop,” Weir said.
“So you want to take advantage of today [Thursday], because it’s only going to get a little firmer and faster.
“Maybe not, with what’s coming [rain], maybe not. But it is playing about as easy as it can play.”
The former Masters winner is hoping to end a 54 year home drought in this event and, the American Kim with two wins this season, has already made his presence felt.
Kim's exploits have brought comparisons with Tiger Woods and Weir says the youngster is blessed with talent.
“He’s very talented. He’s won a couple times already this year. He’s got his confidence going, and he’s going to be a great player for a long time.
“He’s really got all the game and all the shots.”
