Lyng questions hurling changes
by Arthur Sullivan, 12 October 2008
Kilkenny midfielder Derek Lyng has expressed reservations about Galway and Antrim joining the Leinster hurling championship.
The revolutionary proposals to allow the counties to participate in the province were passed at Special Congress but many Leinster counties are not happy with the changes.
Eoin Larkin has already expressed his opposition to the plans and Lyng echoed his teammate's sentiments.
"I'm not really sure about it. Everyone is a bit of a traditionalist. A lot of people will say that the Leinster championship has been weak - I wouldn't buy that," he said.
"I know we pulled away in some of the matches last year but I'd say it was very competitive. And when the likes of Wexford and Offaly went into the All-Ireland series, there were some great games."
Yet Lyng still understands why the move will be so important for Antrim and Galway.
"Galway have a wealth of talent - have had for the last few years. They were beaten by Cork in an outstanding game - I was at it - and then they were out.
"So Leinster might help them. And for Antrim it can only be a good thing," he concluded.
