Redmond warns Gilroy over Dubs
by Arthur Sullivan, 12 October 2008
Dublin legend Charlie Redmond reckons Ciaran Whelan and Jason Sherlock are almost certain to have played their last games for the county as a result of displeasure at Pat Gilroy's appointment as boss.
Sherlock and Whelan played with Gilroy in the Nineties and Redmond indicates they are astonished that the St.Vincents clubman has been appointed over who they see as better candidates.
Gilroy beat the likes of Keith Barr, Jim Gavin and Mick Deegan to the job.
"I'll be amazed if Jason Sherlock plays on and I wouldn't be surprised if Ciaran Whelan now sees this as a good time to end his inter-county career," said Redmond, who was sent off in Dublin's 1995 All-Ireland final win, a match in which Gilroy came on as a substitute.
It is also believed that a number of members of Dublin's winning team in 1995, including Barr, Gavin and Deegan, are angry that they were passed over by someone with far less managerial experience than them.
Redmond also believes there must be no doubt as to who is in charge of the team, with many claiming that the appointment of veteran coach Mickey Whelan in Gilroy's backroom team creates uncertainty as to who will call the shots.
"There can only be one leadership voice in a dressing room. If players get the suspicion that Mickey is calling the shots there will be mayhem," he said.
