Seve Ballesteros

Spanish golfing legend Seve Ballesteros has a brain tumour, he confirmed on Sunday.

The 51-year-old, who retired last year after years of back trouble, lost consciousness last Monday and has been in a Madrid hospital ever since.

He has now revealed that he has a tumour, and that a biopsy on Tuesday would reveal more, as well as informing doctors how to proceed.

“I inform you that after an exhaustive check that was realised at Hospital La Paz, a brain tumour has been detected,” the 51-year-old said in a statement issued by the hospital.

“Throughout my career I’ve been one of the best overcoming obstacles on the golf course.

“Now I want to be the best at confronting the most important challenge in my life.”

Ballesteros won a record 50 titles on the European tour throughout a distinguished career, in which he also landed three British Open titles and two Masters.

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“While all big teams (Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool) were busy protecting their best players, Arsenal was in forefront encouraging injury prone Walcott to participate in that useless freindly. Arsenal has a very thin squad and I remember Walcott said it but Wenger didn't take action to add some players. Arsenal players are not made of steel and Wenger should be prepared for such situation. We need Arsenal supporters on the board of Arsenal who can feel the way we feel when the team is losing and they can force Wenger to buy some experience players. Current board members are only interested in profits yet they (profits) don't go into history of the club”
