Defender Ryan Nelsen has revealed his relief following the news he will only be out injured until the end of next month.

The New Zealand centre-back feared the worst after landing awkwardly and damaging his knee in Blackburn's 3-0 win over local rivals Bolton last weekend.

It was initially thought that Nelsen could have suffered ligament damage and there were some suggestions that he could be a doubt for this summer's World Cup where he is set to captain his country.

But scans on Tuesday revealed that he has torn a muscle behind the knee and suffered extensive bone bruising and will be sidelined for between four to six weeks.

"It's probably the best result I could have got," Nelsen told Radio Sport.

"In the great scheme of things it's not too bad. It certainly could have been worse."
