Haskell backs RFU stance

Stade Francais forward James Haskell says that England were right not to release him for a Top 14 fixture last weekend.

The 24-year-old flanker was at the centre of a bitter, club-versus-country row after his French employers demanded that he be made available for Saturday's clash with Toulouse in Paris.

However, the Rugby Football Union refused as Haskell is almost certain to start for England in next weekend's crucial 6 Nations clash with Scotland at Murrayfield.

Haskell remained tight-lipped on the embarrassingly public spat but has now come down on the side of his country, claiming that Stade are contractually obliged to release him for all England commitments.

"My release for international duty and training is specifically provided for and I regret that there's been a misunderstanding.

"I'll be meeting with Stade once the Six Nations has been completed.

"I'd like to make it clear that Stade Francais have been very good to me and I am very happy in Paris.

"I'm looking forward to playing for Stade Francais again at the conclusion of the Six Nations.

"Obviously, like any sportsman, the ultimate honour for me is to represent my country.

"I am now looking forward to putting this issue behind me so that my career can flourish at club and international level."
