Clarets held at home by Stoke

Burnley earned only their fourth point under Brian Laws but remain in the Premier League relegation zone after a 1-1 draw with Stoke City at Turf Moor on Wednesday.

Tuncay Sanli had given the Potters a half-time lead before David Nugent netted his third goal in five games to see the hosts overtake Hull City and move up to third from bottom.

Abdoulaye Faye shot wide early on for the visitors after Liam Lawrence had found him with a corner.

Burnley tried to create some chances and Chris Eagles fired one well wide before Thomas Sorensen made a simple save from Jack Cork and a more difficult one from Danny Fox.

The Clarets paid for those misses when another Rory Delap throw worked well for them, giant front man Mamady Sidibe flicking on the throw for Tuncay to head in and force the Burnley fans into fearing the worst.

Martin Paterson headed into the side netting after an Eagles cross as Laws' men looked to hit back but they trailed 1-0 at the break.

But they dragged themselves level seven minutes after the restart with a goal out of nothing. Danny Collins failed to do his defensive duties as Paterson turned him inside out and crossed for Nugent to power a header past Sorensen in the Stoke goal.

Both sides went for the win thereafter with Stoke sub Dave Kitson bringing a decent save from Brian Jensen and Eagles and Clarets replacement Kevin McDonald both off target with chances.

In the end the points were shared. Burnley now face Wolverhampton Wanderers - the team directly above them and level on points with them - in a massive home game on Saturday.
