Big-spending Real Madrid crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday evening as Lyon earned a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu to go through to the quarter-finals 2-1 on aggregate.
Cristiano Ronaldo - brought to the club to try and revive Real's dreadful European record over the last few years - gave his side an early lead but a second-half goal from Miralem Pjanic saw them knocked out and they have not now made the last eight since 2004.
Ronaldo opened the scoring on six minutes. Guti, inspirational in the weekend comeback win over Sevilla, sent the Portuguese star away with a pass and the former Manchester United man slotted the ball under the legs of Hugo Lloris to level the tie at 1-1 on aggregate.
Real then had a string of chances to go in front overall and Gonzalo Higuain really should have seen them do so on 26 minutes. The in-form Argentine rounded Lloris, but with the goal at his mercy he side-footed against the post and the French side survived.
Claude Puel's side were very much second best in the opening 45 minutes but they rectified matters after the restart and Iker Casillas was forced into a save from a great long-range effort from Lisandro Lopez, while Sidney Govou shot a good chance over.
Real began to fade and failed to create as many opportunities as in the first half and they were punished with a quarter of an hour to go. Lisandro layed the ball off to Pjanic and the young Bosnian thumped a half-volley past Casillas to leave the home side needing two goals to keep their hopes of playing in the final at their own stadium on course.
Those goals never came, indeed they could have lost on the night as Lisandro and Cesar Delgado both missed late chances for Lyon, who advance to the last eight where they will provide dangerous opposition to whoever they face.
