Harrington's White House date

by Michelle Fortune , 11 March 2010

Padraig Harrington will spend St Patrick's Day in Washington after being invited to visit US President Barack Obama at the White House.

Harrington is due to be in Florida preparing for the start of the Transitions Championship, which tees off on Thursday, but he will make the journey to the American capital to attend the White House St Patrick's Day party along with Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

"I got an invite to go to the St Patrick's Day celebrations at the White House, I won't say it's perfectly convenient, but it's worked out obviously as I'm in the States," Harrington told reporters on the eve of the WGC-CA Championship at Doral.

"I can fly up and come back down in the same day and meet the President - it's very nice.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's something different. You know, obviously President Obama is one of the most charismatic people of the world, one of the most powerful people in the world; you want to meet these people and see what they are like and get your own judgment on things.

"You can tell a lot when you meet somebody, so I'm looking forward to that and plus, I've never been to the White House."

When asked what he would be saying to the President, Harrington added: "Obviously he is very keen on golf. He's a left-hander, isn't he? I don't know, maybe we will talk about golf. Who knows?

"I've got a week to come up with something interesting (to ask). I'm sure everything's been asked before."
