Benitez evasive over Gerrard controversy

Rafael Benitez deflected all questions relating to a possible elbow on Michael Brown by his captain Steven Gerrard, in the wake of his side's 4-1 win over Portsmouth at Anfield.

Gerrard, who had been niggled by some typically clumsy challenges from Brown earlier in the game, appeared to clobber the former Spurs man as both ran towards goal. As Brown deliberately came across Gerrard to prevent his supporting run, the Reds skipper seemed to raise his arms and catch Brown on the back of the head.

Manager Benitez, however, when asked if his subbing of Gerrard immediately following the incident had anything to do with the clash between the players, was evasive.

"We talked before about changing some players and Gerrard was one of them," the Spaniard said with a smile.

Asked if he had seen the incident clearly, he grinned further: "I have seen the four goals and I am very happy today. I think it was nothing."

Gerrard may yet face an FA probe but the boss was otherwise happy with a good attacking display by his team that brought a rare goal from Ryan Babel and a first for Liverpool from summer signing Alberto Aquilani.

"We were expecting a good game, to play well and score goals. The most important thing was to play with an offensive mentality and a lot of quality.
"I think the team was doing well so the midfielders had a lot of possession, so maybe it is easier for people to see (Aquilani).

"I was very pleased for Ryan (Babel) as well, and Maxi (Rodriguez) did a good job."
